The Great "Debate"...

Everyone who has been in business for a long time knows killer sales copy (not just any sales copy, but Hypnotic Copy) is the key difference between success and failure.

You can go out today and with google adwords or a dozen other ways get traffic within an hour. But if that traffic doesn't convert into results for you what good is it? All you are doing is throwing money away.

And did you know you have to complete a 30+ question exam before any copywriter worth a nickel will even consider taking you on as a client?

Yes, you will be spending 20 to 30 hours grueling over essay question after essay question on your product, your market, your customers, your features and benefits and your USP. By the time you finished with this "thesis" a week later you are completely exhausted and mentally drained.

On top of that, you practically have done all the work for them yet you are paying them these huge fees. (Oh, and by the way, did you know some of them have a "junior" copywriter actually do most of the work and they just tweak it.)

And what if you want to have an email written, or come out with a new product, run a special promotion or just make some changes at your site. You have to go through the entire process all over again. Or you are forced to use option #3 below.

This gets expensive and zaps your mental energy and pocket book very quickly. If you have a bottomless checkbook and an endless supply of energy then this option could work for you.

Why software users may get killed!

Second, you can buy one of the sales letter creation machines out there. They are interesting contraptions. Just fill in the blanks and out pops a "sales letter"... or what you might consider a sales letter.

One day a dear fiend of mine, one of the members of a Master Mind group I'm in, grumbled, "If I see one more headline that begins, 'Who else wants to...', I'm going to kill the writer."

He went on to explain the following:

"These lazy writers don't know why they are using that headline or when to use it. There's a psychology behind the right headline, and they don't know it. So they are deaf, dumb and blind when using it. Everyone is using the same headline and it weakens the power of it."

Pat is right. People often show me sites written with one of those cookie-cutter approaches to sales letters. Many of them begin with the same headline, "Who else wants to --"

Now, that headline is famous, but it's over-used. And it only works under the right circumstances. (Do you know when to use it?) But the people using software that guides them into filling in blanks end up with writings that are not unique, personal, or compelling, and certainly not hypnotic.

They end up with a "sales letter", but does it truly sell?

More often than not, no. To be blunt: If you used a software program to generate or "write" a sales letter for you, just ask yourself one question:

Is the letter selling the way you want or not?

If you're not getting the sales you want, don't you think it just might be that sales letter? Be honest.

Pat understood that the right headline is like the right word or the right sales letter.

You sit down at your computer on a Wednesday night, open up your writing software and start with a blank computer screen. You stare at it waiting for an inspiration to come your way. Hours pass, you miss your favorite TV show, dinner is cold and your spouse is upset. And the boring email you ended up writing after 5 hours still didn't bring in enough sales to even take the family out to dinner and a movie on Friday.

Or you write ads nobody clicks on. Send emails nobody wants to read. And craft sales letter that compel people NOT to buy.
